How can i make my chinchilla stop peeing in his food dish?

June 9th, 2010 by admin | Filed under Asnwers.

I’ve had him for a month or so and i have to change his food everyday if not more often because he’ll pee in his food. It makes the pellets all mushy and makes my room stink. Is there anyway to make him stop?

    Stop changing his food.

    Would you eat pee?

    keep it above him
    Google

Get a dish that attaches to the side of the cage. If he hops into it and still pees in it, then you can try putting a shelf above it so that he can get his head to the food, but isn’t physically capable of getting his body on top of the dish.

Get him a toilet. The litter is sold separately

The food should be changed daily peed in or not. There are many different types of feeders out there that can help prevent soiling the food, but I have found a determined chinchilla will always manage to pee in their food dish. I have a few here out of my 70 chinchillas that pee in their dish almost every day. I just keep changing the food daily and washing the bowl. http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com may have some people with better ideas.

Hmm, that’s strange. Something you can do is take the bowl out and thoroughly clean it wit soap and water (or put it in the dishwasher) and then clean it out with vinegar. This will take away the scent of his urine so he won’t pee there anymore. Most chinchillas will usually pee in one corner too, and where that bowl is could be his peeing spot! You can buy a chinchilla-safe litter pan and fill it with chin-safe shavings and put it where the food bowl used to be and move the bowl to a different location.

Also, your chinchillas food should be changed daily, if he pees in it or not. Be sure you are feeding him a high quality pellet with unlimited Timothy hay every day.

    Good luck!
