How do i make learning about food borne illness fun?

June 7th, 2010 by admin | 3 Comments | Filed in Asnwers

I’m planning a Girl scout outdoors skill day this fall and what to make it fun. The topics I want to teach include: packing, making handwash units, fire safety (i’ve done the edible fire, anything new), knife safety, maintaining sanitary conditions to avoid food borne diseases, different cooking methods including box oven, vagabond stove, and dutch oven, and tents. I know what i want to teach but any suggestions on making it fun for grades 1-8??

Will onion or garlic powder in food consumed by a nursing mother affect the baby like using real garlic?

May 24th, 2010 by admin | 4 Comments | Filed in Asnwers

My daughter has been told that she can’t eat any food prepared with garlic/onions in the recipe, becuase it will affect the nursing child, ie give the baby an upset tummy. Seems to me like using onion/garlic powder would not have the same effect? She believes that the powder will have the same affect on my nursing grandson?

How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food?

May 22nd, 2010 by admin | 8 Comments | Filed in Asnwers

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They’re more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients – chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn’t cat food?

I also know of dogs that won’t eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they’re pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who’s? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too – like salmon. You can’t say it’s the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

Which organism has the most energy available to it in a food pyramid?

May 17th, 2010 by admin | 6 Comments | Filed in Asnwers

An owl is at the top, a starling is next, then grasshoppers, then grass. Which organism has the MOST energy available to it? I thought grass at first, but then I thought that the grass might just have the most energy in it, and that the grasshoppers have the most AVAILABLE. I’m not sure, so someone who is positive please help.

How long does it take for chilled ingested food to become body temperature?

May 16th, 2010 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in Asnwers

There is the suggestion that when you ingest combined hot and cold foods that the cooler foods cause any fat to gel in your digestive system. So, it is not healthy to drink ice tea with a meal of steak with a loaded baked potato. I am not sure this is even factual. However, I was wondering how long it takes cold foods to become body temperature, just in case!

When do I start giving my baby girl solid food?

May 16th, 2010 by admin | 10 Comments | Filed in Asnwers

My daughter is almost 3 1/2 months old and I notice that when I begin to eat in front of her she is epressing an interest in what I have on my plate. For example she begins to cry when she watches me eat. Sometimes depending on what Im eatting I’ll give her a bite. Can anyone tell me if I should begin her on baby food and if so what should I be giving. Peas, bananas? What? Is it healthier for me to make my own?
